Each year, millions set New Year’s resolutions—goals or aspirations they hope to achieve by year’s end. Yet, for many, these resolutions often are neglected, forgotten or abandoned long before they’re realized. Personally I don’t have a strong track record with New Year’s resolutions, as I tend to fall short of completing them. However, this upcoming year, I have put my past failures behind me and set new goals to achieve.
My passion for music has been a part of my life for years, and I’ve been studying music theory and composing for just as long. I play instruments like the piano and guitar, and I’m familiar with several others. Music will always be a part of me, and I plan to learn how to produce my own work, with the goal of eventually releasing it on streaming platforms like Spotify.
Achieving this goal comes down to putting in the necessary work and effort. However, it will be challenging to fully commit to, as more than half the year is consumed by stressful school work and extracurricular activities. I plan to dedicate the summer of 2025 to focusing on this resolution, when I’ll finally have the time to make significant progress.
In addition to my musical goals, I also aim to get into the colleges I hope to attend. As my high school years come to an end and college approaches, the constant pressure to decide my future feels both intimidating and stressful. By next fall, I’ll need to begin the college application process, hoping that my test scores will meet the standards of the schools I aspire to attend.
Along with that, my additional resolution is to finish my junior year strong, including the upcoming spring tests, and to properly dedicate the three months of my life to college applications in the fall of 2025. While these resolutions may not be overly difficult, I’m still likely to feel stressed, though I’m hopeful I’ll achieve them. People should consider taking New Year’s resolutions seriously in the upcoming year, not only to improve their lives but also to learn and grow along the way.
