Lily Golabek ’28 and Payton Lark ’27

Softball:
Beginning to prepare for districts and regionals, Varsity softball’s record is a strong 25-6 this season, dominating local teams. Standout games this season include their game at Port Huron Northern, where the teams were tied 4-4 during the seventh inning, until Piper Obermok ’27 scored in the fifth run, leading the team to a 5-4 win. Key players include Madison Iverson ’29, who has had a stellar season with a record of four home runs so far. South just won the MAC blue league championship for the first time since 2015, with the score being a sweep of 20-0 against New Haven.

Sailing:
Competing this spring, South’s Varsity sailing team had an unbelievable season. On May 15, the team travelled to Boston and finished fifth at the National Invitational Tournament. They have had standout performances at various events this year, such as the Baker and Mallory Prequalifiers and the Capitol City Regatta. Next year, Peter Horst ’26 is continuing his sailing career at the University of Miami after being a two-year captain for South, and is currently heading to nationals.

Girls track:
With an ongoing winning season, South’s girls track team continues on its journey to states. After placing second overall in their regional tournament, South continued their tradition of placing in the top two for 38 consecutive championships. As a highlight, Elanor Pilsner ’29 was a triple champion at regionals, and Morgan Duff ’26 beat the school record for long jump with a historic 17 ’10”. Overall, the team is undefeated, going 6-0 and 5-0 in the MAC White.

Girls lacrosse:
With a current winning record of 17-4-2, South’s girls varsity lacrosse team ranks third in the region this season. Next up, they are making their way to regionals. Jordan LeBlanc ’28 is currently the number one goalie in the region, being accepted to play on Michigan’s All-State team, as well as Lyla Hampton ’26, who is continuing on her impressive lacrosse career, competing at the division one level at Eastern Michigan University next year.

Baseball:
South’s baseball team recently won a game at Comerica Park against North, going 5-0 against them this season. The team has won two series and lost three. Along with this, the team placed second in the MAC White conference. Many key players stand out this season, such as Drew Hess ’27, who is leading the team on offense, Jack Denielewicz ’26, who is on pace to break the school career Earned Run Average record, which is 0.61 run average and Dane Lezotte ’26, who is continuing his baseball career next year at Cornell University.

Lily Golabek ’28, Copy Editor

Lily Golabek ’28 at Grosse Pointe South, and is going into her first year on the Tower as a copy editor. She is passionate about journalism, specifically the writing aspect of it alongside things like interviews and current events. Golabek is from Brooklyn, New York where she lived until sixth grade. She still visits friends in Brooklyn often and hopes to attend a college there. “I’ll just go there and stay with my friends, it’s really fun,” Golabek said. “I love it, I’m planning to go back there for college.” Outside of school, Golabek is interested in music and art. She has attended more than a dozen concerts, including artists like Billie Eilish, Arctic Monkeys and Tyler, the Creator. Her favorite concert was seeing Wallows. “I was so close to the B-stage it felt personal,” Golabek said. “It was one of my favorite concerts ever.”

Payton Lark ’27, Social Media Manager

When Payton Lark, ‘27, isn’t writing stories or posting on The Tower’s social media, she’s helping with peer-to-peer, which is a program where special needs students do various activities. With a sister on the unified basketball team, Lark is very involved with the program; she might even be the team manager this year. “I love unified basketball because it allows me to make other students feel seen and included,” Lark said. Lark is extremely fearful of snakes. Out on a hike, a snake was mentioned, and she began to cry. Lark could go on for hours about every feature she hates about snakes. “I really really hate snakes,” Lark said. “I don’t like that they don’t have legs, and their nose is their tongue.” Lark is an incredibly caring person; she has six dogs, and four of them have come from the streets. She was interested in writing for The Tower ever since they visited her class in eighth grade, when they told her about how you could write about things you love. A spark lit in Lark. “I very much love the news and politics, so I found that interesting,” Lark said. “And I love being able to have my voice heard by others.”
