As generations come and go, we often see trends that follow that same pattern. Hacky sack, what was once created and popular in the 1970s, has now made its comeback into our society today. Keeping the sack, a bag filled with beads, off the ground using only your feet and other body parts, has become a skillful game taking over both in and outside schools all around the world.
As with many large trends, social media has played a crucial role in bringing back the excitement around hacky sack. With word spreading about the game through countless TikToks and other platforms, many teens have now started to understand why the game was popular before. Many students around South have begun to gain interest in the game as well. Lucas Clare ‘27 appreciates how social media has sparked the trend again.
“Honestly, without social media and my friends, I would have never started playing hacky sack,” Clare said. “I really started playing it because my friends introduced me, but it really all started growing because of social media.”
The game has not just grown in popularity in South or in the U.S, but all over the world. With the game originating in Oregon, it quickly took off among many high school and college students all around the world. Not only is it a good way to practice motor skills and gain new tricks, but it’s also an active way to spend time with friends. Sam Rouleau ‘27 portrays how the game has filtered into his life.
“I honestly play hacky sack anytime I can with my friends,” Rouleau said. “Whether that be at school or hanging out on weekends, I always bring my sack with me.”
Although hacky sack has seemed to be dominated by males, females have still found interest and enjoyment in the game. When thinking of these sports, many just think it is more of a guy thing, but time has shown how anyone is able to enjoy these types of games, like Malone Sullivan ‘27.
“You mostly see guys at our school or on social media playing hacky sack, but honestly, I really enjoy it,” Sullivan said. “My friends and I always play it together, so I’m honestly not even sure why it is seen that way.”
Social media and other platforms have become an important tool for tracking trends and bringing back things that once were.
“I am shocked that hacky sack made its comeback, but I am definitely not mad about it. It’s such a fun game,” Sullivan said.
