You either love or hate her, but you have definitely heard of her; Taylor Swift makes it onto your screen again breaking records and setting new standards for all artists. Her latest album “The Life of a Showgirl” receives mixed reactions from her various range of fans. Whether it’s a 50-year-old man or an eight-year-old girl, someone has something to say.
Historically receiving hate, Swift is used to the backlash when releasing new work. With a plethora of genres she displays, fans can find it hard to navigate where her career is constantly headed. Emma Padden ’26 has listened to Swift ever since she was little and she recognizes the shift in lyrical decisions throughout her albums.
“Growing Taylor Swift has been my favorite artist,” Padden said. “Although all of her music is amazing, I favor certain albums like ‘Lover’ and ‘Reputation’ more than the others. I believe that her new album is still so good but is so different then her other ones.”
As many may know, Swift is engaged to Travis Kelce, a professional football player, and she has experienced many hardships in prior personal relationships in the past. A lot of this hate has been primarily focused on the presumed album’s muse, Kelce. It has got to the point of fans wishing the worst of her relationships to receive the music they are craving.
“I would never wish her and Travis to break up,” Padden said. “But I am missing her old work. Right now when I listen to [“The Life of a Showgirl”], all I can think about is Travis rather than relating to her songs.”
On the other hand, fans understand that Swift is the one that makes the decisions on what she releases. South teacher Kendra Caralis resonates with the approach that Swift has continuously brought to her music.
“I think the cool thing about Taylor Swift is she’s always written about her experiences,” Caralis said. “When she was a teenager, she wrote about teenage things, and now as a 35-year-old, she’s writing about 35-year-old women things.”
For this album rollout, Swift has participated in many interviews and talk shows to help with its promotion. In an interview on “The Zane Lowe Show,” she talks about the positives of her life, while also addressing the criticism of this demanding process.
“The rule of show business is, if it’s the first week of my album release, and you are saying either my name or my album title, you’re helping,” Swift said.
