After opening in August of this year, JJ’s Custard Company has made an impact on the Grosse Pointe ice cream scene. Tucked into the “Cabbage Patch” in Grosse Pointe Park, JJ’s presents itself as an unique twist on traditional ice cream.
This was immediately evident when you entered the building. The floor was a bright pink marble that covered the entire store. The walls were a more subtle pink with an ice cream sauce design and rainbow sprinkles. Despite the welcoming wall art, the illuminance lighting struck me all at once. It was extremely bright and overwhelming, and perhaps a bit sterile for an ice cream joint.
The menu was huge compared to the other ice cream options offered in Grosse Pointe. Tons of wacky combinations and items were displayed. I really enjoyed the variety at JJ’s that was offered compared to some of the more “basic” places around GP. Some of these included “The Wowffle,” “The Sweet Bun” and “The Cookie Monster.”
The first item I ordered were the “Dubai nachos,” which were a part of the many loaded nachos options. Some of the other options included “Dunkaroos Nachos” and “Ferrero Rocher Nachos.” The nachos I ordered came with many waffle chips and were presented in a white box, which was perfect for on-the-go. There was a section that had chocolate sauce and another that had the vanilla custard with the pistachio filling.I first tried the custard with a waffle chip dipped into the chocolate sauce. I liked that it was custard, compared to a hard scoop of ice cream. It was easy to dip my waffle chip in and enjoy. I immediately tasted a strong pistachio flavor and then got the taste of bittersweet chocolate. The portions of the nachos were very big, so I gladly took some home.
The second item I ordered was “The Wowffle.” I got the Hard Scoop Wowffle, which has ice cream scoops between two waffles, but there were also Custard and Dole Whip options as well. There were many ice cream flavors to choose from, but I decided to stick with the chocolate theme and get “Michigan Two Way.” It had chocolate fudge and broken cookies in it. I ended up choosing to have two plain waffles, but chocolate chip and blueberry were some of the many other options. The ice cream was very good and not what I was expecting. It wasn’t too sweet, which made a perfect pairing with the rich waffles. There was a good amount of powdered sugar on top, also. “The Wowffle” was my favorite out of the two. It was very unique and something that not every ice cream store offers.
JJ’s Custard Company has a new take on an ice cream shop with an unmatched atmosphere and selections. It is the perfect place for families who want a “sweet treat,” or those “foodies,” who want to be adventurous and try something new. Whether it’s a scoop of ice cream, or a “Wowffle,” JJ’s definitely has something for everyone.
