Though many people enjoy calling Grosse Pointe home, whether that be for the schools, public resources- like the parks- or the sense of community, rarely has one said they stay in this area because of the great variety of food. The five cities of the Pointes do contain options for meals, whether that be breakfast, lunch or dinner. The issue arises when one might be interested in trying something a bit different. There are multiple restaurants to choose from, but in most instances there is not a variety within different cuisines.
With well over 40,000 residents, the Grosse Pointes have many people to feed. Within each of the five communities, there tends to be smaller social districts and retail areas that contain most of those cities’ restaurants. An example of this would be the Cabbage Patch, located in Grosse Pointe Park. Within the four block stretch, there are many restaurants, including Bricks Pizzeria, Brine Oyster Bar, Red Crown, Park Grill and even more. These restaurants, being Italian, American and Mediterranean, provide a nice mixture within that specific area. But for these restaurants to be successful, their offerings need to be different as they are in direct competition with each other. When residents want something new, they are ready to take the drive, but where, exactly?
As a whole, the Grosse Pointe community does have many restaurants scattered throughout each of the cities. When in search of something new, you can always drive over to the next city for something different. From the Park to the restaurants on Mack in the Woods, the drive can take anywhere from 10-20 minutes. Downtown Detroit, especially in recent years, has been expanding, and with such a variety in food, many people will choose to take the drive, especially on the weekends to grab food there, rather than in the Pointes. The accessibility is the main factor, if the timing is the same, why not go somewhere where one can get a great experience and great food?
Over the last few years, the Grosse Pointes have leveled up their food game, attempting to introduce new restaurants, many being small businesses, and expanded the options within each cuisine category. According to Crain’s Detroit Business, a new Taco Bar will be opening on Mack. The restaurateur, Branden McRill, owner of a Michelin Star restaurant, is coming back home to introduce this concept. These trials, when done right, help again and again to increase the options for all residents of the area.
This expansion process, even the restaurants located on the Detroit side of Mack, continue to help keep the Grosse Pointe residents full and happy. The only way to get more options in the food that is offered is to continuously support the new and upcoming spots. Showing support will allow for new small businesses to open, creating the variety that every resident wants to see.
