The 2027 class council organized a kid-friendly Fall Carnival on Nov. 15 from 1-4 p.m. in the South gym to raise money for the class of 2027.
Activities like face painting, candy corn guessing, pumpkin painting, potato sack races, a bounce house, pumpkin bowling, horses, a movie and a bonfire all took place within the vicinity.
Highlighting fun for the family, it was made possible by students at South spending countless hours working on the event. South National Honor Society member Samatha Turner ’26 has volunteered at previous carnivals to gain service hours and loves how the ambiance is constantly radiating with happiness and laughter.
“My favorite part is seeing all the kids having the time of their lives, doing all these different activities and just generally enjoying themselves,” Turner said.
As a member of the 2027 class council herself, Bizzy Carswell ’27 helped chair and organize the selection of food for the carnival.
“Aside from chairing an event, a lot of early morning meetings and texting back and forth was put into planning the fall carnival as a whole,” Carswell said. “Budget constraints were a challenge because a lot of things have gotten really expensive, but we make it work due to careful planning.”
Local parent Marta Girdwood brought her kids to the carnival after receiving one of the advertisements that were posted through the community and delivered to elementary schools.
“I would definitely recommend this event to others, and we will be coming back again for future events,” Girdwood said. “The kids are able to check out new activities and have some fun with friends.”
Turner believes the event truly caters to a relationship building environment for such young ages, and that kids’ spirit and willingness to engage in the fun is a big factor of success.
“The carnival really brings the community together and makes the atmosphere have a ‘one-GP’ feeling to it,” Turner said. “Kids can also experience South for their first time, and they can get a feel of what it is like to be in the building when most of them will probably be coming in a few years.”
