On Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 7:20 a.m., the freshmen class gathered on the front lawn for their first spirit day, completing a quarter of their runs through the halls during their time at South.
This year’s freshmen theme, “F1 Freshmen,” inspired an artistically designed poster featuring a race car, a red painted rock displaying a race car number and red shirts paired with a checkered bandana, a look that participant McCloy Sullivan ’29 loved.
“Spirit day has been pretty exciting,” Sullivan said. “I really like our theme and think it’s one of the best. Our shirts and checkers are cute, too. I’m just getting really excited for homecoming.”
The excitement of Freshmen Spirit Day reached beyond the students. The event was organized by the 2029 class council with help from the Mothers’ Club, which planned the breakfast and took photos. South alum and parent Carly Russell enjoyed watching her son participate in his first Spirit Day.
“The freshmen are still definitely trying to figure all of this out,” Russell said. “They seemed more tired than the juniors, but they still looked like they were having fun, and I think the theme was super cute. Everyone seemed to love it.”
Because the freshmen have not yet voted for an Eboard yet, the spirit day morning was mostly planned by their class advisor, Kendra Caralis, along with students who recently joined the Student Council. Even with an inexperienced Student Council, the spirit morning ran smoothly and brought up school spirit.
“This was the first chance for the freshmen to see what South spirit is really all about,” Caralis said. “It’s fun to see them all out here and getting excited.”
