As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, the state in which our government sits is almost shameful to admit. Peace and humility are qualities that are not well-known nor understood. There is no corroboration among parties or civil conversations between candidates, but only hostile threats and personal attacks. Lies and misconceptions are spread throughout the media, and acts of injustice go unpunished.
Tensions between the Republican and Democratic parties continue to divide the country, but are most notably fueling hateful speech among certain government officials. And while free speech is protected in our country, for the people who are supposed to protect and represent all citizens, it is morally questionable. Shortly after the death of former FBI director Robert Mueller in March, our very own president, Donald Trump, posted “Good, I’m glad he’s dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people!” on Truth Social, according to CNN. While Trump has every right to post that statement, should the most powerful person in our country be posting such a thing? Definitely not.
According to Pew Research Center, 86 percent of Americans believe that Republicans and Democrats are more focused on fighting each other than on solving problems, which directly correlates with the idea that our country stands divided. And it’s not like no problems are occurring in the country; on the contrary, many issues go undiscussed while members of Congress argue over issues that 40 years ago would have a majority vote because people didn’t vote out of spite.
And the arguments aren’t focused on how we can better the country, but in order to make the other side look bad. Following the full release of the Epstein Files on Jan. 30, many Americans pushed for justice for the thousands of victims who were abused in the horrendous acts committed by Jefferey Epstein and many more. But what ended up happening was just a barrage of name-calling and useless subpoenas against people who always find a way to evade the law.
According to House.gov, both Hillary and Bill Clinton were subpoenaed to face questioning for the investigation related to Epstein’s and Ghislaine Maxwell’s crimes in late February. Former President Clinton’s name and photos were found in the files, according to Fox 45 News Baltimore. But what was the outcome? Locked away depositions and no further investigation into their crimes. I guess the short investigation was successful because it was really just to damage an d blame the Democratic party, as the House’s majority is Republicans. And of course President Trump, whose name is found thousands of times in the files, has not been investigated for any crimes related to Epstein and the many victims.
Our nation, as much as it preaches justice and liberty, has a problem with letting those at the top escape the law and their crimes. No party is willing to set their pride aside and accept the wrongdoings of the whole and until we have a stable government that starts to really represent the people, it will be very difficult to appreciate the state of our country.
