Dead poets society 1989
“Dead Poets Society” (1989) is a dramatic film set at a 1950s all boys boarding school. The movie follows the storylines of multiple boys and their new eccentric English teacher. Their new teacher, played by Robin Williams, encourages the boys to explore themes of creativity, art, love, confidence and individuality, in turn allowing some of them to break out of the oppressive structure their prestigious school has set up for them. The film further explores parent and child relationships in regards to education and pressure that many academic families place on their children. The film serves as both a cautionary tale against oppressive academic and family systems, but also provides a hopeful message of individuality.
Perks of being a wallflower 2012
“The Perks of Being a Wallflower” (2012) follows the socially awkward and introverted freshman Charlie Kelmeckis, played by Logan Lerman, as he is befriended by a couple of senior classmates. Through Charlie’s relationships with his new senior friends, he learns about the inner workings of high school friendships and relationships while unpacking his own unresolved traumas. Despite their mentorship, Charlie feels lonely and continually lost. The film explores the effects of mental illness on high school life and the lack of support that many individuals face. This movie is a depressing watch, but earns its place in the coming-of-age genre for displaying the unspoken sadness and isolation that many teens feel in the tumultuous transitional period that is high school.
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off 1986
“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” (1986) follows the adventures of Ferris Bueller, played by Matthew Broderick, his best friend and his girlfriend as they skip school and spend their day exploring downtown Chicago. The trio of characters end up in many bizarre scenarios as they avoid running into parents and faculty, while making the most out of their day off. The movie is an easy watch, with strong themes of comedy and satire, while still entertaining the struggling dynamics between the carefree Ferris and the people closest to him.
Ladybird 2017
“Ladybird” (2017) is a teen comedy-drama that follows the strongly independent Ladybird, played by Saoirse Ronan, as she navigates her relationship with friendships, romance, religion and wealth. She hopes for a scholarship to an out-of-state East Coast college, far from her home in Sacramento, California. On top of her need to escape California and the people around her, Ladybird’s relationship with her mother strains both of them as they struggle to understand each other. The movie is quiet, slow-paced and doesn’t follow a defined storyline, opting for a number of stories taking place throughout the film. This movie explores the lost feeling that accompanies many teenagers as their questions on life are met with uncertainty.
