On Jan. 9, 2026, the South Latin Club took its yearly field trip to the Detroit Institute of Arts Museum to see ancient Latin pieces of art. David Smith, Latin teacher and head of Latin Club, always appreciates the hospitality and joy the DIA brings him and his class.
“Starting this year, we have recently allowed all classes to participate in the field trip and were able to bring even more students on the trip this year,” Smith said. “Everyone had such a great time with enough unique artwork and good food to last the entire day, making it the perfect trip to kick off your weekend.”
However, it’s not just the students who have a great time, but also the staff who find happiness in every one of the schools that visit them throughout the year. DIA tour guide John Bishop enjoys seeing the younger generation of students learn about history.
“It reminds me of when I was a kid and going to one of many art museums,” Bishop said. “Not only am I interested in learning about new pieces of art that come into the museum every day, but it’s nice to share the knowledge I already have about the old pieces with students and other people.”
The DIA offers a wide range of food for lunch at their food court, with different cooks and chefs for each station. The food options consist of a grill station for fried foods, a salad bar, a pizzeria and a sushi station, allowing for everyone’s food cravings to be met. Smith feels the food station allows students a break from the art to have fun with their friends and have a good meal.
“The reason why I make sure we visit the DIA every year is that it has a little something for everyone,” Smith said. “I’ve never had a student come up to me and say that it was a waste of their time, and when you never hear that, you know you have to come back every year.”
