South’s Student Government Charity Week is returning this spring, combining fundraising with school spirit and a focus on community. Throughout the week, students can participate in activities, including raffles and sales during lunch to benefit Turning Point, Inc., an organization for teenage girls and children who are survivors of domestic violence.
This year, Student Government Vice President Elizabeth Ciconte ’26 emphasized the importance of teamwork in making this event successful.
“All of our [department] chairs have been very good at communicating and organizing this year, which is very important,” Ciconte said. “I would say, ‘The script needs to be done by this date, this time,’ and then everyone did it… It kind of just kept things running smoothly.”
To ensure the week runs effectively, the executive board ensures that all members have a say in the decision-making process.
“We usually do our big event in the spring, where we pick and vote on a charity,” Ciconte said. “We start by asking before Christmas break if anyone has any charities that they have an idea for—I think I got a list of like ten charities.”
Beyond the fundraising, the leadership team hopes the week increases visibility for the organization and encourages the student body to get involved.
“I’m excited to see how our plans come together, especially if we can organize a restaurant fundraiser and get support from the community,” Ciconte said. “I’m hoping this one does as well as last year’s—I’m excited!”
