Imagine this, it is a snowy and cold Saturday afternoon in December and you are driving with your family to pick out a Christmas tree. On the way, you pass by streets of lights and are listening to Christmas music on the radio. You and your family pick out the biggest tree and cut it down. These are activities that build excitement for Christmas and anticipation for the holidays. Real trees embody the true meaning of Christmas by representing tradition and they are environmentally friendly.
Before artificial Christmas trees became popular, real trees were the staple in many households. According to an article by National Geographic, “fake” Christmas trees came about because of the major deforestation problem in the 19th century. Germans first started using “metal rods as branches and adorning them with bird feathers.” This type of tree eventually spread to other countries and so did the concept of having a fake tree. However, we should be able to question the sustainability of fake trees and the detrimental effects of plastic on the environment. Most plastic trees may end up in landfills and can contribute to climate change. Not only are real Christmas trees biodegradable and renewable, they also help grow the economy. There are many Christmas tree farms and local businesses that help the community by providing jobs and fostering connections.
Although it may seem small, many people, including myself, love the fresh smell of a real tree. Since people love it so much, many places like Bath and Body Works and Yankee Candle have made candles with the smell for purchase. Christmas trees help allude to the ambiance of Christmas in homes. Just seeing the decorated and lit up tree helps to foster nostalgia of a person’s childhood and even make them feel happiness. Holidays are usually spent with loved ones and a tree can help represent family and friends. Without the traditional Christmas tree “smell” and the tree sheddings, it is hard to symbolize the ambiance of Christmas.
Buying a real Christmas tree every year helps create traditions for families that can be passed along for generations to come. Making the experience of picking out a tree special can help generate excitement and anticipation for Christmas. Deciding on the “right” tree is one of the most fun parts. One of my favorite traditions with my family is going out to eat, decorating the tree and watching a Christmas movie.
Although plastic Christmas trees are more convenient due to their price and cleanliness, it is hard to match the feeling a real Christmas tree brings and the possible memories that could be had. Real Christmas trees are overall the best environmentally friendly option and symbolize what Christmas really is about.
