On Sept. 30, South’s Varsity Field Hockey Team mercied Clarkston High School, with the final score being 8-0 on South’s Senior Night. Some of the seniors picked up their first goals in the season, with their playing time being prioritized.
Captain Evie Wodzisz ’26 played the forward position and a bit of center midfield during the game, scored two goals, and felt very happy with the win and her team’s performance. She credited the win to the work of both herself and her teammates.
“Stella Fry and Caroline Weldon [both ’26] were key players in the game last night,” Wodzisz said. “They both scored a goal and worked tirelessly on the field, never giving up on a play.”
With the game being on Senior Night, the goal was for the seniors to try to score as many goals as they could or be involved on the field as much as possible to make their last season a special moment.
Wells Webber ’28 played the midfielder position and discussed the assists she helped with for the seniors, focusing on giving them as many opportunities as possible to score.
“Sometimes during the game, the assists didn’t work, but it didn’t matter because we kept trying,” Webber said. “Eventually, it got really fun in the second half when we started working together more with passing.”
With the seniors being the primary pivot during the game, the help of the upperclassmen did not go unnoticed; they wouldn’t have won the game without each other.
During halftime, the seniors walked out with their parents onto the field while being announced over the loudspeaker. They were applauded by the crowd and their upperclassmen teammates for their hard work and dedication to the sport.
“Tonight was planned perfectly,” Fry said. “All of the moms and underclassmen who organized it truly made it special for us seniors, plus we also had an amazing win.”
