Singer and songwriter Lucy Dacus has been creating music for almost a decade, but her most recent album, “Forever is a Feeling”, has emerged as her strongest lyrical and musically sound album. Dacus has not only released four solo albums but was also a member of the indie group, “Boygenius”, featuring well-known artists Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker. But recently, when “Boygenius” went on hiatus, Dacus took inspiration from the friendship with her bandmates, especially with Baker. The album included background vocals from both Bridgers and Baker. Released on Friday, March 28, “Forever is a Feeling” is a music collection of growth, new beginnings, and our ever-apparent cycle of struggle we all experience.
With a total of 13 songs, “Forever is a Feeling” recounts Dacus’s journey through life, intimacy, and her newfound relationship with “Boygenius” member Julien Baker, with the couple going public right before the release of the album. After listening to multiple songs such as “Best Guess,” “Most Wanted Man” and “Come Out”. “Best Guess”, the first single released on the album, is one of my favorites. In this song, you are truly able to feel for the passion Dacus holds, with a soft approach to the idea of love. The same can be said for “Come Out” as this song holds a light melody, but the lyrics within drive the story Dacus works to approach true love. The thing with Dacus’s music is that she doesn’t merely upfront tell her listeners what she wants to say, she creates a world of imagination.
While yes, many of her songs are about love and the great things life has to offer, she also dives into the idea of heartbeat and the cycle of pain that everybody experiences but sometimes doesn’t talk about. With her song “Limerence”, Dacus approaches the idea of guilt within her religious upbringing. It’s a modern, sad ballad, but a really good one; Dacus knows how to write. What makes this album so special isn’t just the musical production but the way she is able to so easily explain the cycle of life in ways people struggle to understand. Even if you aren’t the biggest fan of her work or haven’t heard her name, I believe Forever is a Feeling is an album that everybody needs to hear, whether you realize it or not.
