When musicians give back

Oliva Rodrigo:

“Drivers License” singer, Oliva Rodrigo is currently touring her second album, GUTS. The GUTS WORLD TOUR is set to stop at 56 cities, with tickets selling secondhand for over $400. Rodrigo has pledged a percentage of her ticket sales to go towards local women’s clinics on every stop of the tour, trying to help women access abortions in states that have passed laws to make it increasingly difficult. Encourages others, Rodrigo posts links on social media for others to help donate. Rodrigo has been a vocal activist for women’s rights since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade in 2022, saying “So many women are going to die because of this” while headlining the popular music Festival Glastonbury. Taylor Swift:

As everyone knows, Taylor Swift is currently touring a majority of her discography during her world tour, “The Eras Tour”. By the time the Era Tour is set to wrap up, Swift will have visited 53 cities creating an economic boom at each stop. During her two concerts in Detroit held at Ford Field back in June 2023, Swift gave a reported “generous donation” to a local food bank, Gleaners. This is something that Swift has been quietly doing at each of her stops, donating up to 40,000 pounds of fresh produce in each city. This has prompted an increase in donations to the food banks long after Swift’s buses leave cities. (Photo of Swift playing in Detroit in June: Scott Legato)

Dave Grohl:

Rock Drummer Legend Dave Grohl has been caught at soup kitchens and food centers donating his time and money around Los Angeles. Recently Nirvana drummer and Foo Fighters founding member, Grohl was spotted on Super Bowl Sunday grilling meat for over 18 hours with his friends and family for a family shelter in the suburbs of Los Angeles. During his day of grilling, he served over 500 families. Grohl has been an active member of giving back, doing numerous charity concerts in his career, some raising over 3.5 million for various charities. Jay Z:

24-time Grammy winner Jay Z has frequently donated his wealth throughout his over 28-year career. In October of 2023, Jay Z and fellow rapper Flava Flav hosted a charity dinner, raising over 20 million dollars for Jay Z’s organization founded Shawn Carter Foundation. The Foundation was started in 2002 by Jay Z and his mother, named after himself. Shawn Carter Foundation gives scholarships to underprivileged high school students to help them get through college. Jay Z has done various concerts to raise money, notably a show with Rihanna during the COVID-19 pandemic to raise money for healthcare workers. Jay Z continues working with his foundation with his celebrity wife Beyonce.

Julia Roeder ’25, Supervising Web Editor
Whether it’s The Rolling Stone, Taylor Swift, Phoebe Bridgers, or Tyler the Creator, Julia Roeder ’25 is guaranteed to have seen them in concert. All eyes envy her as she walks into the journalism classroom wearing merchandise she bought from the concert the night before. When she’s not listening to her favorite artists, she spends most of her time jamming out on her own guitar, being your average aspiring popstar. Besides her still-amounting popstar career, Roeder is also the Supervising Web Editor of The Tower. This is Roeder’s second year on staff and she is looking forward to continuing her role and being involved in the community and school. “I love Tower because you’re informing the community of what’s going on and also getting to know people on staff,” Roeder said.
