It is a day that I will remember for the rest of my life because of my 6,705 days thus far on this planet; Friday, May 11 was the best.

The day I performed in Second Suburb.

Second Suburb is a completely student run group that satirizes South, Grosse Pointe, and things that have happened within the community. We wrote all of our material, we do improv, and then we perform it live in front of hundreds of our peers and even teachers.

Performing in Second Suburb itself was so fun and it happened so fast I can hardly remember it as I write this, just two days later. Former cast member Richard Altovilla ’11 warned me of this. He said it was so fun, that once it gets started it all flashes by.

Having roughly 600 of my peers, neighbors and even teachers laugh at material I helped write and perform was an incredible rush.

All day I had the butterflies simply because I was excited to just start the show. We all knew the show like it was the back of our hand. But at exactly 7 p.m. the doors opened and then as we sat backstage going over things we could hear crowds of people enter the venue.

That is when my stomach dropped. My heart was pounding. I could read it on everyone’s face, we were all nervous. We had run through the show so many times, but it was as if we just realized now that we had to perform it in front of hundreds of people.

The hour before the opener was painfully nerve-wracking and tense. Everyone was so wired and nervous. I wanted to puke, but I just wanted to start the show. My mind was racing.

What if it isn’t funny?

What if I mess up?

Things settled down once the show started.

After getting that first laugh things flew by. With each laugh came more confidence. And thankfully, I did not mess up my lines or embarrass myself. So that was good. Well, actually I probably did embarrass myself but whatever.

I know that some of what we do is misconstrued as rude, crude, offensive, or just plain mean. However, we try to do everything in good taste. Remember, it is a comedy show. Some teachers and parents may look negatively upon the show, but once you look past some of the profanity or vulgarity and see what is really going on, it is quite amazing.

Remember, this was put on  by a group of nine kids. We wrote two hours worth of satirical skits and we have worked on the show since November. And then we go out on the stage of Music Hall and show our creativity to hundreds of people, live.

Being a part of the 2012 Second Suburb cast was one of the greatest experiences of my life. The fun we had was ridiculous. Now that it is over, I don’t know what to do. I no longer have to spend at least four hours at the home of Wes Cimarrusti ’12 or Geoff Welsher ’12 every Sunday.

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end.

I want to thank all of my cast members for all of the great times we had and for accomplishing something so incredible as a team. It felt good to have that hard work pay off and get tons of laughs.
