The ins and outs of prom 2024

The+ins+and+outs+of+prom+2024
Isabella Haindl ’24

Sequins, glitter, feathers and ruffles are just a few of the embellishments that add to the extravagance of prom dresses. However, in recent years, prom dresses have become less flashy and more of a style that many refer to as “Easter dresses.” When I think of prom dresses, I think of dresses with unique and classy designs that aren’t too over the top but still have that elegant prom dress look to them. I believe that the “Easter” prom dress is taking the formal elegance away from this once in a lifetime event.

Many of the older prom styles also included very bright colors and lots of neon. While some bright colors are still seen in many prom dresses today, the neon trend has dwindled. In terms of neon, I believe that the simple pastel colors or even the select few bright colors are much better than the neon style. While prom is a time that many people want to stand out and have the best dress, neon will make you stand out a bit more than you may have intended.

“Easter” prom dresses have a simpler look to them, with muted colors, and are made out of simpler materials. Prom dresses are often made out of silky or beaded materials, while “Easter” dresses are made out of lighter cotton. “Easter” dresses are exactly what they sound like, dresses you’d wear to your aunt’s house for Easter brunch. I feel that the simplicity of these types of prom dresses takes away from the glitz and glam that prom is all about.

A trend that I adhered to when looking for my own prom dress was the satin look. The satin prom dresses are simple yet have an elevated elegance to them that makes them a great choice for a prom dress. Depending on the style and design of the dress, the satin helps take it from a boring everyday dress to a unique prom dress. The one tricky thing about satin is that depending on the cut of the dress it can appear overwhelming and more like the dress is wearing you and not like you’re wearing the dress.

With all that being said, no matter my personal opinions on dresses, I truly believe that you should wear whatever dress makes you feel the most beautiful. Whether you go all out full glam or tone it down and go more “Easter,” if you feel comfortable and like you’re the most stunning person in the room, then that’s all that matters.

When she's not helping a staff member on Tower, she is busy being the 2024 Class president, a Varsity Field Hockey player, or just enjoying a book. “I am overall looking forward to a great year on Tower.” Haindl said.
