It seems like every day something is being scalped, gouged or hiked. Everybody seems like they are always just trying to get a leg up on someone or screw someone over for a profit. Something as silly as Pokémon Pop-Tarts are sold out instantly after hitting the shelves at Target just to be posted on eBay two hours later at a three times price hike. It’s ridiculous. Companies like LEGO raise prices on their products in order to milk the last dime out of something that is made for children. This is an issue that is seen in every facet of our lives and something that we cannot avoid, no matter how much we try.
There is such a “reseller” market out nowadays, it seems impossible to get your hands on something if it is even remotely popular or people think could have a chance of being exploited for profit. When things like this happen so frequently, it’s hard to stay positive. This “every man for himself” mindset is detrimental to the human experience and can lead to feeling constantly negative and eventually apathetic to the world.
It seems impossible to care about things when we are overworked, overwhelmed and constantly bombarded with negative information we do not want or care about. It’s especially hard for people who are going into a new stage in their lives with all of this uncertainty and anger around them. It makes sense that the body would emotionally shut down to protect itself.
But when things like this happen, you can’t stop caring. That’s how you lose yourself and the people you care about. What helps me is setting small, achievable goals and focusing on myself. You can’t control what others are going to do, only your response to them. If someone is doing something you don’t like or agree with, the easiest thing to do is block them out and stop worrying about it. It sounds a lot easier than it is, but I promise that once you realize that you are the number one priority, things get a lot easier. Just do what you can in your daily life to make a positive impact on yourself or someone else. Baby steps count just as much as normal steps. It does get easier. You just have to try every day.
