Art is something that will never die. People can look at art as different things; in one person’s eyes, it can be beautiful and calm, in others, it can be abstract and physically exhausting. As a dancer, I understand art as something that is unique and lively.
Everyone has their interests, and most of the time, people’s views do not align. In a recent interview, Timothy Chalamet made a comment saying he wasn’t interested in working in ballet or opera because “nobody cares about it anymore.” I highly disagree with this.
Regarding opera and ballet, there are a variety of people who are interested in the career or just going to see a performance. According to Arts Air over 100,000 people attend the Nutcracker just during the Christmas season. This has been a staple in the ballet industry for over 130 years.
To me, it seems that art isn’t dying and people aren’t losing interest, but it is evolving and being shown in different forms. Now, with AI and continuous growth in technology, people are showing art in different ways than before. Artists’ work from the past never dies,- but instead, they inspire future work.
In an article on Medium, the author talks about how in the movie Coco, the main character Miguel Rivera goes into the afterlife and finds his family. He soon realizes that it is important to keep the family alive in memory with pictures when he goes back home. This can be seen through art because it will only die when people don’t use it and see it in their daily lives.
Just in Detroit, there are dozens of forms of art that are still living. From graffiti on the walls of buildings to the people dancing in the streets, are examples of thriving art is all over. In my eyes, art is something that people value even when they do not realize it.
With all of the developments and different forms of art, it can be hard to realize that it is all around. I think that something that should be considered is not only the art itself but the artist who created it. The only way art can live on is when people talk or reflect on it. Even though the artists can die, their art still lives.
