As each season changes, restaurants across the country fight for the best seasonal flavors. Ice cream, which is arguably the easiest food group to adjust monthly out of them all, is at the top of the list for fast food chains such as Dairy Queen to reinvent. This month, Dairy Queen released two new limited flavours, the Oreo Reese’s and Chocolate Dipped Strawberry Blizzards. After seeing all the hype surrounding these two new flavours on social media, I knew that I had to give them a try.
To start, I tried the Oreo Reese’s Blizzard. To be transparent, I was very underwhelmed with the peanut butter to Oreo ratio. I rarely got any bits of Oreo in my bites, and even when I did, there was so much peanut butter overpowering it that I couldn’t even tell. Being a super fan of Oreos and Reeses myself, this Blizzard was extremely disappointing. Not only were the flavors not dominant compared to the peanut butter and vanilla ice cream base, but when I did taste them, I almost wished that I hadn’t because of how disproportionate the ingredients were. Even if you are a big peanut butter fan like I am, this Blizzard is not worth the hype surrounding it. It could be that I just got a bad batch, but I doubt that is the actual problem. If you are looking to try this Blizzard, consider trying this next one instead.
To say that I was surprised by how good the Chocolate Dipped Strawberry Blizzard was is an understatement. I am someone who always orders desserts that sound safe to me, and don’t include fruit. My philosophy is that if it is meant to be unhealthy, just let it be unhealthy. So, the addition of a strawberry-based ice cream with chocolate bits seemed obnoxious and unnecessary to me. But oh boy, was I wrong. Going into the first bite, I fully expected to taste the classic artificial strawberry syrup flavour, and scrunch my face in a sweetness overload. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find actual chunks of fresh strawberry throughout the ice cream base, with dark chocolate pieces accompanying them in every bite. Not only was this Blizzard fresh and delicious, but it actually convinced me to start trying fruit-based desserts more often, which has never happened to me before. Overall, this Blizzard was a delicious combination of tart fruit and sweet chocolate, making every bite more perfect than the last.
If you are looking for a sweet treat, avoid reaching for the Oreo Reese’s Blizzard and take a risk instead with the Chocolate Dipped Strawberry Blizzard. Although both were good, the strawberry flavor mixed with the dark chocolate blew the Oreo Reese’s Blizzard out of the park, making it a must-try, even if you are as against integrating healthy ingredients into dessert as I am. Trust me, it will change your life, and quite possibly your “no fruit, it’s dessert” philosophy as it did mine.
