Fashion has always been about more than clothing. There are key parts of every outfit that make it its own, and generations associated with each piece. Over the years, trends have changed and returned like clockwork. Now, students seem to have a high interest in vintage styles.
Recently, students have taken an interest in thrifting. Digging through piles of clothes, they hope to find a vintage piece. Cole Parangeli ’28 often goes thrifting and can only sometimes find the appeal to why vintage might be the new thing.
“It’s exciting when you can look for something that no one else has,” Parangeli said. “Nowadays people are only wearing clothes that are mass produced so it’s nice to have something unique.”
With the constant recycling of trends, South alumna Megs Bojarczyk ’20 notices how today’s generation dresses completely differently from how she remembers it was when she was in high school.
“When I was in high school people would wear skirts and dresses,” Bojarczyk said. “When I see students leaving South now, they are wearing all sweats, and it is just completely different.”
Although trends are consistently changing, old ones are usually being brought back. Bojarczyk thinks that students might be into vintage because they know everything always comes back into style.
“The thing is when I was in high school, you would not catch anybody wearing straight leg jeans,” Borjarczyk said. “Now everybody is wearing straight legs and the new upcoming fashion trend is skinny jeans.”
Although going thrifting can often be rewarding. Maeve Shine ’27 believes that thrifting can oftentimes be tiring.
“To be honest, I’m too lazy to go thrifting,” Shine said. “To me it’s just not worth it to spend hours digging for a used clothing item.”
Everyone has a different sense of style. There are parts in each outfit that can make someone’s personality show.
“The thing with thrifting is that there is something for everyone,” Bojarcyk said. “I’ve gone and bought a blazer that was ugly but I took it home, sewed it and made it into something I wear all the time, but thrifting isn’t about clothing being old, it’s about finding something that is different from any other piece.”
