Valentine’s Day is often seen as a holiday that most single people dread. With all the teddy bears and chocolate candies given, people often feel excluded or alone. Girls have taken the opportunity to change this dreaded holiday for the better. Galentine’s is known for a day or night to just spend time with the girls.
During Galentine’s girls can get together and appreciate each other’s friendships. Students at South are taking the opportunity to spend time with their close girlfriends to celebrate the changed holiday. Jackie Fradenburg ’27 got together with her friends this past weekend and spent an evening talking and doing activities.
“We got dressed up, ate dinner, and talked while we painted cute pictures,” Fradenburg said. I painted something that reminded me of summer and my friends.”
In a high schooler’s busy day-to-day life, it can be hard to find time to get the whole group together. Gillian Byarski ’26 is still in the process of planning their Galentine’s while they make sure that each friend is able to attend.
“It is really important for us each to be there,” Byarski said. “We won’t all be so close next year since we are going to college. We have been friends for so long, it would be weird for us not to all be there for our last Galentines together.”
Friendships are important to all ages whether you’re in high school or not. They are people that you can always rely on. Mena McLean went to two Galentine’s in the past couple weeks.
“My first Galentine’s this year was at a floral shop,” McLean said. “Then my second one was at one of my friends’ houses, who has hosted Galentine’s for the past three years.”
Something special about girls is how connected they are. Fradenburg emphasizes the support that she feels from her friends and what they mean to her.
“I know that there is never any judgment coming from my friends,” Fradenburg said. “I have been friends with them for so long that I can really trust them with anything. On Saturday, if I could explain it in a couple words it would be fun, easy and funny.
Girls can find comfort in each other and can always have each other to look out for. Byarski is excited for the upcoming weekend and never takes a night with her friends for granted.
“We are all leaving next year,” Byarski said. “All of my friends mean the world to me, and I want to celebrate our friendship as much as possible before we go away.”
