Freshman Reid McGuckin ’29 is a player on the ice hockey team, playing the position of forward and was previously a player on South’s freshman football team. He’s well known for his perseverance and endurance not only as a player, but as a student.
For an underclassman, McGuckin changes the game with his positive outlook and his persistence on the ice. Outside the Rink, his enthusiastic and social attitude makes an impression on his teammates, especially Marty Wayman ’28, who plays defense.
“Reid’s a great kid, he’s a great teammate, he’s funny and he talks a lot; he also works really hard,” Wayman said. “He’s probably the best freshman hockey player I’ve ever seen come out of South.”
McGuckin’s strength as a teammate doesn’t just come from showing up; the practice he puts into the game makes all the difference, and still doesn’t get in the way of his responsibilities as a student. Wayman makes it known that McGuckins’s positive energy doesn’t go unnoticed.
“I mean, he shoots like 10,000 pucks a day, and then he does all his homework,” Wayman said. “The last couple of games he’s been amazing, he’s got some goals, some assists, he works really hard.”
Being one of his best friends and also having played on the freshman football team, Jacob Campbell ‘28 sees McGuckin as a go-getter. Campbell notes McGuckin’s persistent persona, stating that McGuckin will do anything to exert himself further if it means strengthening his team.
“I think Reid is just an all-out gritty player. I think he wants to do anything for the win,” Campbell said. “He wants to do anything to make the team better, and I think he’s a great player.”
Adding to Wayman’s astonishment at McGuckin’s work ethic, Campbell sees McGuckin as a role model. Out of sports, McGuckin gets his work done and is looked upon, especially when in need of assistance.
“He’s just super gritty, super tough, tenacious. I think he’s a beast.” Campbell said. “I will say, outside of school, Reid is a really smart kid; he gets good grades, and I always look up to him as someone I can ask for help if I need to study.”
