Throughout the seasonal holidays, the gift-giving culture of Christmas and Hanukkah fosters a grand sense of surprise, especially within Grosse Pointe families throughout the community. Exchanging gifts as a part of holiday tradition with friends and family strengthens long-lasting bonds, which shows appreciation towards those who have a positive influence on our lives.
Beyond the surprise aspect, gifts can inspire personal growth and create new habits. Malone Sullivan ’27 recently received a sauna, which has become essential in achieving her new years resolution goals of wellness.
“For a while now, I’ve been wishing for a sauna due to the health benefits it brings into my life, and after being given one over the holidays, I’ve used it every day,” Sullivan said. “The best part is the convenience of being able to walk into my garage and relax in the sauna instead of having to book appointments around town.”
Others received gifts that signify a step towards independence and test the growth of maturity. Sandro Secco ’29 was gifted a car this past Christmas as a gift to welcome his future freedom coming into the new year.
“This Christmas, I got a gray BMW, which was a complete surprise and it is also my first car,” Secco said. “This is a big responsibility on my hands, but it will be useful for driving around Grosse Pointe, especially when my friends and I are hanging out.”
As well as cars, any vehicle is a teen’s dream gift. Some gifts were specifically tailored to the recipient’s hobbies, as Charlotte Goudie ’28 was given her lifelong dream of her own jet skis.
“I have loved jet skiing for a while now after doing it with my family and friends every summer,” Goudie said. “Because we are keeping them close at the Little Club Harbor, we can use them a lot during the summer.”
Many families choose gifts that offer long-lasting benefits for well-being. Sullivan now wakes up each morning looking forward to spending time in her sauna for relaxation in the convenience of her own home.
“My family usually receives one big gift each year for Christmas, but the sauna was a gift for everyone in the family to put to use,” Sullivan said. “This gift is so special to me, considering that it’s been on the top of my list for years now, and I am beyond excited to finally have a sauna of my own.”
