For yet another year, the Grosse Pointe South Varsity Club hosted a coat drive, allowing students to help those in need of cold-weather clothing. Scheduled to last from Dec. 3 until Dec. 10, the drive had an initial goal of collecting 100 coats. Co-president Joseph Reid ’26 is appreciative of the opportunity to help those in need of extra protection over the colder months.
“It’s cold weather, holidays are coming… people really, really need these coats that a lot of people end up having just hang in their closet,” Reid said. “I know my family has some that I’m gonna look to donate this year.”
As of Dec. 8, the Varsity Club collected a total of 167 coats. These coats and more are then donated to Cass Community Social Services in Detroit after the drive ends. Reid is proud to consider the coat drive the landmark event of the club.
“It’s a super big deal to be able to get these people in need warm,” Reid said. “It’s those simple things that really keep people going during the holidays… and make the world a better place.”
