As the World Cup approaches, taking place in the summer months of 2026, the United States, and the world as a whole, are faced with many changes coming to this year’s cup, including taking place in three different countries rather than just one.
Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) president Gianni Infantino’s decision intends to expand on the feeling of community that the sport creates.
“When people go to a football match, they are all excited about the game. They speak with each other and they live something together: an emotion, a shared emotion,” Infantino said. “I think this is what we need to foster. That’s why we need events.”
Infantino is excited to see the results of the 2026 competition, which he believes will also help highlight the 250th anniversary of the United States of America. He hopes that being able to celebrate the occasion will be beneficial to billions around the world.
“Football unites, soccer unites, we bring everyone together and we celebrate together and it will be unique,” Infantino said. “There is no other event that can bring so many people from so many parts of the world to one country to enjoy something.”
