When artists like Taylor Swift, Tame Impala and Sabrina Carpenter announced their 2025 album releases, fans and listeners reacted with high anticipation, but when the albums dropped, rather than making the top charts as expected, they received a noticeable amount of backlash. This has led listeners to wonder if the pressure on artists to stay relevant has left them to drop their usual creativity and stick to the safer option.
On the opposite end, some believe that fan expectations could be too high, especially as social media hype builds the albums up long before they are released. From the moment artists announce an album, fans usually begin to break down and build up every teaser, creating pressure for perfection. Sam Andris ’28 agrees that fan pressure and expectations can affect how album drops are received.
“I do think that fans sometimes expect much more from the artists than should be realistic,” Andris said. “Fan expectations could be too high and when artists try to mix it up, fans could get disappointed.”
Though these albums faced criticism, some fans believe that the music quality was retained and that the albums were as good as expected. Cora Smith ’26 agrees and believes that, despite the mixed reviews, many listeners still find these releases enjoyable.
“Even though I didn’t love most of the album, I did still think that some songs were great,” Cora Smith said. “I know Taylor will make a comeback.”
A common idea that Smith agrees with is that artists have been very rushed with how quickly they turn over albums and new releases, which leads to the discussion of whether speed affects the overall quality of the album. With the desire to stay relevant, many artists feel the need to produce music quickly and in a rushed manner.
“I think that artists worry that they will be forgotten about if they don’t make a new album every year,” Cora Smith said. “In Taylor Swift’s album [The Life of a Showgirl], I think you can tell she rushed, especially with the lyrics.”
These differing opinions demonstrate the complexity of the music industry, the way albums are received can be influenced by many factors, including fan expectations and social media hype that lead to higher standards. Any small change in an artist’s style or creativity can create conversation and controversy among listeners.
“How can artists be expected to be what fans want all the time?” Connor Smith said. “Even so, I think a lot of artists are dropping great songs right now.”
