South’s boys’ ice hockey team played Trenton High School on Dec. 2. South’s team lost 6-2 against one of the top teams in their division. Trenton has been undefeated as of the beginning of the 2025 season. Assistant captain Charlie Winkler ’27 thinks that South’s effort and energy was there even though the result of the game didn’t go their way.
“I don’t think the scoreboard really showcased how well we played,” Winkler said. “It was a great team game but we had a couple mistakes that kind of pulled us out of the game.”
Having to play against a top team and knowing the risk of losing resulted in a challenging game for South players.
“I think the biggest challenge was just stepping up against a tougher opponent, a team that’s ranked higher,” Winkler said. “They move fast but we just had to face it head on.”
The team knew going into the game that this would be a tough and hard fought battle between Trenton. Cole Zaccagni ’28 knows that trusting teammates can keep the players energy high during low moments in the game.
“We have a great group of guys here,” Zaccagni said. “I just love these guys that I get to play with.”
Head coach Ben Warda knows how tough of an opponent Trenton is for South. He saw his team work from start to finish and never gave up throughout the game which led him to conclude the fact that this battle was the best in their season so far.
“We’ve got guys that can play up to their high level of talent and then others that need to get there,” Warda said. “It was cool to see the ones that are coming along, and now we know where we need to be at the end of the year.”
