Over the past decade, the United States has seen conservatism move further to the right with the Make America Great Again movement. After decades of dominating the popular vote, the left has had little response on how to counter republicans’ growing support and distance from the center. However, while the Democratic Party has always had leftist factions within its ranks that differ from its liberal establishment, one part is growing in popularity faster than any other caucus in the country: Democratic Socialism. With more Democrats shifting further to the left, and Zohran Mamdani’s campaign serving as proof of its effectiveness with voters, analysts are debating whether Democratic Socialism could be the future of the party and the answer to resisting Trump policies that the left has been seeking.
Background
Democratic Socialism looks to create an economy based on meeting the needs of working people rather than producing as much profit as possible. This aims to give the working class power over the economy and make all essential services public, like health care, for example. This differs from capitalist practice, where private corporations meet supply and demand and set prices where they bring in the most revenue. Socialism strives for economic equality, whereas capitalism is better suited for production and increasing GDP. The “democratic” part of the name is given as the socialists look to make reform through policy changes, rather than revolution to overthrow capitalism in its all. In all, Democratic Socialism wants economic and political power to be shared among citizens, differing from capitalism, which promotes private, free markets, and communism, which is led under authoritarian control in centralized government.
Modern American Practice
In U.S. politics, Congress especially, Democratic Socialists advocate for a universal health care system, free tuition at public colleges and universities and higher taxes on the ultra wealthy to fund public programs, among other things. On a local level, politicians like New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani have campaigned on free public transportation, free childcare and affordable housing through freezing rent. While these policies have local support in many major cities, like Milwaukee and Seattle, many initiatives require legislation from the state level, like increasing taxes. The top name in the Democratic Socialist party is Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), who has advocated for the Green New Deal, Medicare for All and a 32-hour work week. Some main criticisms of the policies include feasibility about giving the public free resources, and taxing the rich even more despite the wealthiest already paying the majority of taxes in America.
Future
While the party is increasing in popularity, it has an uphill battle in policy implementation because they are still the minority in their own party. The Democratic Party establishment still supports capitalist policies and defends open markets. While Bernie Sanders has run for president multiple times, democrats generally have still resonated more with moderate candidates such as Hilary Clinton, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Despite this, there is a clear shift towards socialism, with many calling for Representative Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) to challenge Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), and even being among the top few candidates in almost every 2028 presidential election primary polls. While most analysts argue democrats should shift towards the center to defeat Trump and other MAGA politicians, that sentiment is decreasing with Harris’ loss, and others saying the left must be radical to counter the right’s radicalism. While Democratic Socialists likely will remain a minority faction in the near future, their popularity continues to grow as economic inequality greatens and the working class becomes more frustrated with the establishment politicians on both sides.
