The day after Thanksgiving is an exciting time for many, as the community comes together in the Village to watch or even be in the Thanksgiving Parade. On Nov. 28, the parade will commence and highlight many local programs, from local hockey clubs to dance studios, as they participate in the parade.
Every year, South’s marching band and dance team participate in the event, adding music and fun to the parade as they represent South. The marching band is ready to combine with Grosse Pointe North’s marching band to perform and brighten the mood in the parade. Christopher Takis, South’s marching band director, is ready and excited to once again participate in the parade.
“I know North would say this as well, the bigger, more pressure-filled performances have already happened, like at football games and at festival and stuff,” Takis said. “I think we all feel pretty good about where we are and we’re ready to perform.”
Takis is not the only one excited about the marching band’s role in the parade. Harper Barnwell ’28, a marching band member, is ready to brave the cold and be in the parade once again.
“I’m excited, even though it’s always really cold,” Barnwell said, “But we’ll be playing Feliz Navidad and then the South Cadence as a break for the wind instruments.”
The marching band isn’t the only South program that will be participating. The South dance team is also getting ready to have fun and perform while trying their best to stay warm on the usually chilly day. Simone Dennis ’28, a dance team member, is ecstatic to be a participant in the parade and be able to perform for the community.
“It’s always fun every year and they’ll be providing Santa hats and windbreaker jackets to wear while dancing,” Dennis said.
Both groups are looking forward to the parade and even if not many people come to watch the parade. It’s always a fun community event that South is able to be a part of through the dance team and marching band.
“It’s a fun, smaller scale community event that I just think everybody who lives here always kind of looks forward to,” Takis said. “I’m just glad the band can be part of it.”
