Coming to theaters Nov. 21 is Wicked: For Good, the highly anticipated sequel to Wicked. The Broadway show was adapted into a two-part movie series, with part one released on Nov. 22, 2024, and finally finishing the story this November.
“Wicked Part One’s” success, winning two Oscars among many other awards, has left fans waiting for almost an entire year to see how the film adaptation will conclude the story. After “Wicked’s” success on Broadway, Universal Pictures decided to adapt it into a movie. South’s English teacher Dan DeMarco, who is very involved in school plays, believes that part one was a success.
“I thought it did a great job, because it not only enhanced some of the elements of the Broadway production,” DeMarco said. “I thought it introduced some new ideas, too.”
Part Two is projected to go just as in-depth as Part One, focusing now on Act Two of the play. Director Jon M. Chu spoke about how the second part will be centered on the hero arcs of both Elphaba Thorpp and Glinda the Good in an interview with Deadline.
“I think this is how you show a superhero, especially these women as superheroes,” Chu said. “And not have to fit into what a guy’s superhero is, the stereotype of it all.”
As the story progresses, famous characters from “The Wizard of Oz” are featured such as Dorothy, the Cowardly Lion and the Tin Man. For Annie McCaron ’28, this is the most anticipated part of the new release.
“I’m really excited to see how they portray Dorothy and her journey,” McCarron said. “The characters in the first movie did such a good job.”
The original cast returning includes celebrities like Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo and Jonathon Bailey. Grande spoke about the upcoming release in an interview with People Magazine.
“It’s very special,” Grande said. “It’s very emotional. I think the second movie really embodies unconditional love and forgiveness and friendship. And you’ll have to wait and see, but it is quite different.”
