With Halloween just around the corner, the National Honor Society (NHS) hosted its first-ever Trunk-or-Treat on Sunday Oct. 26. During the event, members of various South clubs dressed up in costumes, decorated their car trunks with Halloween themes and handed out candy to attendees.
With South never having hosted anything that was Halloween-themed, NHS Vice President Lily Frey ’26 was all for the trunk-or-treat idea, drawing from her childhood memories of trunk-or-treats before she moved to Grosse Pointe.
“I thought this was a good idea to build Halloween and fall spirit,” Frey said. “I enjoyed things like this when I was younger, so I feel like it would be good to have something like this for community kids to enjoy.”
In addition to the kids going crazy over the candy, there was also a fire truck and music being played for the kids. Teacher Troy Hernandez enjoyed bringing his kids to a community event and was impressed with the organization for a first-time event.
“I can’t believe this is the first time this event is being put on,” Hernandez said. “Everything looks like it’s moving perfectly. Trunks look great, nicely decorated, especially the police car.”
Club members like Evie Berger ’27, founder of Women in Tech, who participated in the event and handed out candy, thought it was a great way to involve a diverse range of school clubs and bring the community together.
“Events like this in Grosse Pointe are important because we have such a close-knit community,” Berger said. “The event went well. I wish there had been more advertisements earlier in October so that more people from elementary schools would come, but overall I thought it was fun and successful.”
Many families and kids showed up and were able to add an extra day to Halloween fun and get some additional use out of their costumes. The NHS had successfully created a safe, festive environment that brought together students, families and local residents for a memorable celebration.
“For the first NHS-sponsored Trunk-or-Treat, I’d say it was a great success,” Frey said. “We had a good turnout and all the families had a great time. Even our volunteers enjoyed decorating Trunks and dressing up to boost Halloween spirit.”
