Everyone has had that moment where they have lost a paper, forgotten an assignment at home, or even given up due to unbearable hand cramps from writing. All of these problems have one similarity: physical homework. Whether it is an entire packet’s worth of assignments or just a single sheet of paper, when an assignment is a physical worksheet, the chances of it being grouped in with the rest of the papers lying in my backpack greatly increase. I believe the convenience of online assignments should be taken into account more strongly by both the teacher and the student.
The benefits of having assignments consistently online are endless for both students and teachers. Most students agree that typing is much quicker and more convenient than having to handwrite entire worksheets. With the rate of homework that teachers give students, the efficiency of typing is necessary to complete assignments in a timely manner. Students are also able to view materials from prior quarters or past units instead of sifting through months of paper.
Speaking on efficiency, having assignments online makes a teacher’s job to grade much simpler. Reports from Drexel University state that with grading, the feedback on assignments is given immediately after being reviewed by a teacher, making the process of submitting work more efficient for both the teacher and the students. The conviencency of online comments results in a student being able to reflect on feedback, before the next day of class. Even now, with the rise of students using AI for schoolwork, teachers can view the document’s history and put it through AI inspection sites to confirm authenticity.
On a related note how un-ecofriendly it is having tons of paper that is wasted each day from homework that could simply have been put online. I find that most of the paper given to me throughout the day isn’t even used for more than two days and then ultimately will be “recycled”. Not only can printing be wasteful, but also be extremely costly. Online assignments would both reduce waste and receipts.
I am certainly grateful for being able to have access to all of the materials provided by my teachers at the click of a button, and I find it to be one of the greatest developments learning has gone through. The efficiency for students and teachers to do work is exponentially benefited by online assignments. Being able to complete your work quicker, view feedback instantly, help the workload of teachers and cut down on paper waste are all reasons that prove that the increase in schoolwork being online is a major asset.
