The official date of South’s ‘Howdy Homecoming’ is Oct. 11, 2025, and with spirit week, the pep assembly and the homecoming game, there is much to anticipate as the fun-packed week draws close.
The student government and student association play the biggest roles in planning homecoming, assigning each class’s theme. This year’s are F1 Freshmen, Skiing Sophomores, Jedi Juniors and Sailing Seniors. Meg Pierce, teacher and student association advisor, admires the community aspect of the dance and the school spirit of it all.
“I love the school community and the school spirit, everybody coming together with that similar shared passion for the school,” Pierce said.
The student council and student association work hard to make homecoming week special, with a lot yet to be incorporated, like the petting zoo, the new DJ and more. They’ve made it clear: the goal this year is to get people involved.
“Homecoming is absolutely something people need to come into, and feel connected, a way to celebrate, all being here together and having a common experience,” Pierce said.
Heidi Bryan ’26, class president for the class of 2026, is celebrating her last homecoming at South. Bryan helps organize fundraisers, collaborates with administration and works with all grades.
“I’m really excited. It’s always really fun, and it’s like a long journey to get there,” Bryan said.
Bryan believes that due to South’s lack of other fun and interactive events besides spirit weeks and pep assemblies, homecoming is worthwhile even if you only go and try it out once.
“I think it’s a must go at least one year, just because we don’t really have any other fun activities, or big things like it, until prom senior year. So, I think just being able to go to one and experiencing it is fun,” Bryan said.
For freshmen and new students, homecoming is a new experience. Cheyenne Holtz ’29, a member of her class council, is especially anticipating seeing her work pay off.
“I’m really excited to see all the decorations and stuff because we helped set it up,” Holtz said.
Holtz is also looking forward to the homecoming football game, South v. Lakeview, having already attended recent home games.
“Everyone goes to the games, there’s more energy and more of a vibe,” Holtz said.
Sharing the excitement, Pierce believes that homecoming is a highlight of the high school experience.
“I think it’s been up and down over the years here at South, but I think it’s absolutely something that people need to come in and do, being connected, a way to celebrate all being together and sharing a common experience,” Pierce said.
