For this addition of Lucy’s Letters I want to tell you why I chose to not go to Punta Cana for spring break like the rest of my grade. You may be thinking, why would you want to miss out on all the fun? Everyone is going, are you going to feel left out?
I originally wanted to go to Punta, like everyone else, however I started having second thoughts early on and didn’t feel secure in that decision. It wasn’t until my friend and Editor in Chief of The Tower Julia Roeder posted on her snapchat story that our spring break detour began. She had mentioned that she wasn’t excited for Punta, and I slid up and agreed. We then decided that it would be incredible to go on a trip together.
Julia and I have been friends since first grade, so this trip would be our full circle moment. Us and our moms met for brunch to decide where our trip would be. We threw around many ideas and finally landed on Belize. My parents had gone there before and described its magical environment complimented with its rich history.
While the rest of my classmates are at the parties in Punta Cana, Julia and I will be hiking in caves, repelling down cliffs and touring an old Mayan pyramid. We both share a love for learning about different cultures and history, so we will have the ability to nerd out together. After all of our exploring, the second of our trip will be on the beach. For the people that love to tan, the UV will be 12, so expect me to come back tan as ever and Julia (she’s a redhead) to come back as red as ever.
Although I am going to miss my other friends, I can’t wait for my friendship with Julia and relationship with my mom to strengthen. I know that we will remember this trip for the rest of our lives and I would rather learn new things and explore historic places than lay in the sun 24/7. I am in no way saying that going to Punta is a bad decision. For me, my personality and values, it was just not the option that I was looking forward to. I can’t wait to explore a part of the world with my best friend.
