For a long time South High school has had numerous traditions to uphold. One of the most beloved being the Powderpuff game. This game overall gives female students a chance to show their strength in a flag football match. The game will demonstrate South’s school spirit, friendly competition, and participation.
With South High school having been around for 97 years, there are many traditions that follow. For years the Student Association has been in charge of one of the school’s favorite traditions, the Powderpuff game. The advisor of the Student Association, Meg Pierce has provided an organized event annually.
“I don’t have the best documents from previous advisors for how long powderpuff has been going on,” Pierce said. “I just know that it’s been going on for longer than I have even been here.”
Powder Puff has been a way for students to connect for many years. It brings all the grades together and forces people to make connections with people they are not around everyday. Junior Dempsey Ciconte chaired last year’s spring powderpuff and is continuing this year.
“It’s not a lot of work,” Ciconte ‘26 said. “We encourage the students to sign up and just have to advertise for the game itself.”
When the weather starts to get warmer there is nothing better to do than go outside and do activities with friends. Including all the grades in one sport is an experience for everyone to enjoy. Sophomore Helen Haindl participated in last year’s game and had many chances to meet new people.
“I thought it was a new fun experience,” Haindl ‘27 said. “I had the opportunity to meet new people and was able to do one last fun event with my sister before she graduated.
To add to the excitement there are coaches to come teach the girls how the game will go. Teachers at South who have experience with college football and women’s flag football come in and help the game run as smoothly as possible.
“So far it’s shaping up to run like we have run it for the past couple years,” Pierce said. “I’m hoping for success and hoping for more students to come and hang out and either join in and play or just come and watch.”
