Over midwinter break, social studies teacher Kendra Caralis and a band of her students went on a European escapade, taking on Saltzburg, Vienna, Budapest, and Prague. Students not taking a foreign language have the opportunity to learn about different cultures. Caralis and the rest of South’s social studies department have spent the last couple of years planning this international trip.
“For this trip, we wanted the kids to learn about the people, the language, and the culture of the places we were visiting,” Caralis said. “We try to keep the trip’s history related, so a lot of the things we do on the trips have historical context.”
Their itinerary included many different museums and monuments where they learned about the history of Europe’s most powerful families. After this last trip’s success, Caralis is hoping to plan a similar trip with a different destination, Egypt.
“We create a great opportunity for students to travel and see new places,” Caralis said. “I’m really excited to do something like this again, so if any students are looking to take a trip, they should come see me.”
