Defeated on the ice

Boys varsity hockey team faces tough loss

Thursday, Jan. 4, the Boys Varsity Hockey team hosted Catholic Central in a tense game. Catholic Central is the number one team in the state and hasn’t lost a game to a Michigan team in four years. The boys fought and pushed through the hard game, but unfortunately lost 0-6.

South Hockey alumni and brother to Michael Mourad, CJ Mourad, was there to support the team. Mourad believes the team has improved throughout the season, but still sees a lot of room for improvement.

“I feel like the team could learn how to communicate better and really get to know each other,” Mourad said. “That’s how they’re going to play well together.”

Senior Defenseman, Drew Brady ’24, believes that the team could have had a much better performance. Though they put in a lot of hard work throughout the season, both on and off the ice, they struggled to put pucks in the net during the game.

“We spent a lot of time on the [penalty] kill tonight,” Brady said. “We need to lock in and keep out of the [penalty] box during future games, that was what was really hurting us.”

After watching the game, head coach Alan Korolewicz, plans to work on defensive zone coverage during practice. They want to work on their new lines he has created. He hopes for the team to at minimum win a regional championship.

“I think it was mostly about effort and attitude when they came in today saying that they didn’t want to deal with embarrassment. They definitely wanted to hang with them,” Korolewicz said. “We brought a good attitude and if we continue bringing it, we can play against anyone else.”
