The Gentleman is a fun movie which I really enjoyed. It’s directed by Guy Ritchie, and is about a marijuana drug lord trying to sell his drug empire.
This is a return to form for Ritchie. He is back doing crime movies and you can really tell he enjoys making it. The movie has so much energy and heart, and in a world full of remakes and reboots, I couldn’t be more happy that there is a movie like this.
The overall tone or feel of the movie is extremely energetic. The movie starts fast and doesn’t stop until the very end. It’s really intense and fun, and this really helps the movie feel a lot more digestible.
However, one of the problems with the movie is that the plot is very convoluted and confusing. You really have to think in order to understand what is going on. This could be a good thing for some, but I found this way of storytelling put me off.
Although the plot is confusing, it really isn’t the main focus. The movie is a character-driven story. Each character is really eccentric and entertaining to watch. They really help Ritchie’s quirky style come to life. My personal favorite character was Rickey Pearson played by Matthew McConaughey.
Along with the characters, the acting itself is also really good. McConaughey is amazing, and the supporting actors are talented as well. Colin Farrell who plays Coach and Michelle Dockery who plays Rosalind Pearson were real standouts.
Additionally, the dialogue in the movie is fantastic. Although it sometimes feels like characters say things that don’t help progress the plot. With that being said, it is still very entertaining and the dialogue gives each character an interesting voice.
In particular, there are some really intense moments in this movie that are incredible. These moments radiate stylized fun. The camera work during most of these scenes is phenomenal and captures some really cool shots. The best part about these scenes is the characters. Since the characters are so likable, they really add stakes to these scenes.
My favorite part of the movie was the editing. It’s super fast-paced and unique, it’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen. The quick edits help bring a level of intensity to the movie that otherwise wouldn’t be there. It also helps the movie’s pace because you feel like everything is happening fast. This movie would be completely different with slower, less stylized editing.
The Gentleman is a really good movie that just doesn’t reach the tier of great. It’s a movie that puts style over substance, but that’s part of what makes it work. I’m giving it a 7/10.
