The scooter life rules

By Jack Roma ’17 | Staff Writer

The start to one of the most disappointing health stories in the history of the universe began May 14 during a JV lacrosse game against University of Detroit Jesuit.

I ran onto the field for my first shift of the game; as we were working the ole’ offense around, I leapt magnificently to catch a high pass. As I came down I heard a snap, landing directly on my left ankle.

The night was spent with vigorous pain only to find out the next morning my ankle was broken. It was the start of one of the worst summers, health wise, of my life.

The recovery time was estimated to be about a month, but being the All-Star Athlete that I am, the recovery time was extended another month, and included a course of physical therapy, leaving me in a space boot from May to mid July.

I had about two blissful weeks in summer where I was injury free, and it might have been the most carefree I’d felt in 2015, until I started to feel some pain in my lower back. I went to a specialist and I was informed that something was wrong with my lower back, and I needed surgery. That put my recovery from the start of August all the way to the start of school.

For the rest of the summer I could not drive, swim, sit up or anything in that nature so I was basically just on earth to enjoy the oxygen.  After a series of doctor’s appointments and hard work, I was cleared by the doctor to finally go swimming for labor day weekend, which I took full advantage of enjoyed with my boys and couple root beers.

Everything was going great until about two weeks ago when I broke my big toe playing football–a manly sport–restricting me from action until further notice from the doctor.

All of these incidences have prevented me from achieving my goal: having a great summer with my squad. Instead of boating and having a heck of a time with all of them, I sat around and died of boredom.

To this day I am still going to appointments for my various serious injuries, but I am hoping that 2016 will be injury free. If there is anything to take away from my injuries in 2015, it’s that riding around on a scooter is awesome, especially in school, and you need your legs more than you think.
