The varsity boys swim and diving team will be going to States on Friday and Saturday in Holland, Mich.

Diver Eric Romer ‘15 has a shot at winning states, head coach Eric Gunderson said.

“We have Jacob Montague that is swimming a 200 individual medley (IM) who might have a shot at winning a state title,” Gunderson said.

Other South swimmers participating in states are Ethan Briggs swimming the 200 (IM) back, Cam Francis ‘17, Robby Koueiter ‘15 and Devlin Francis ‘15 who are all doing 100 fly. Connor Mallegg ‘16 is doing 100 back, and then there are three relays going. Both Cam, Jacob Montague ‘16, and Koueiter are on the 200 medley. Students participating in the 400 free relay are Cam and Koueiter, Devlin and Ethan Briggs ‘18.

“South’s big competition for the meet are Birmingham Grove, Birmingham Seaholm and Saline,” Mallegg said.

“I am looking to go at least top 16 in the state for 100 backstroke,” Mallegg said.

Repeating the same top three spot will be a challenge for the boys because some of the swimmers graduated last year.

“I want for our school to stay at least top 10 but reach for top five best in the state.” Gunderson said.

Both Groove and Seaholm were the only two schools that placed above South last year in States. Each have talented swimmers that could repeat the same this year, Mallegg said.

“We are hoping to squeeze out a top 10 finish state meet. We were third last year and if some of our swimmer have good time scores, maybe one or two of our guys can win.” Gunderson said.
