Staff outlasts seniors in annual end of the year softball game

Story and photos by Jared Brush ’15 | Staff Writer

The annual Softball game between the Staff and seniors took place on the baseball diamond on Monday, June 4, with the teachers winning 11-10, ending its three year losing streak.

This tradition dates back about 14 years ago, when teacher Tom Schultz decided to host a softball game between the staff and students. The game was created to have a fun event at the end of the year.

“We have a great time every year, “ said Schultz, “The staff won the first 8 or 10 games but are now in a slump since losing the last three years”

Although the main point of the game is to have fun, that doesn’t mean there isn’t trash talking between the players, Schultz said. Trash talking happens  the whole year leading up to the game.

A high offensive start lead by the senior team lead to an high offensive game throughout the first four innings. After four, the teachers and students were tied 9-9 going into the fifth. The teachers held the seniors scoreless the next three inning, while scoring two of their own. The seniors could only put up one run in the final inning and the final score was 11-10.

In the game there were some huge blasts which  included a three-run home-run by Ron Williams ‘14 and a big triple by staff member Andre Williams. Other players were just happy to get contact with the ball.

“I got a hit so I was happy,” said Sandi Siemaszko, who has played in the annual softball game for five years.

Some players wanted to go the full nine innings and think the results would have been different.

“We wanted to go all nine innings so we could blow out the teachers,” said Miranda Turner ’14, “but they didn’t have the stamina.”

Overall the game was a success, there were enough players and nobody got hurt. Schultz said.

“I had fun and everyone else had fun and that’s my objective,” said Schultz “We don’t really care if we win or lose, but that was big win for us.”
