Girls Lacrosse stays #1 in the state by beating #4 Mercy, 12-9

By Harrison Krasner ’14 | Staff Writer

The number one ranked South Girls Lacrosse took down the number four ranked Mercy in a 12-9 nailbiter on Thursday.

“As a team I would say we played very smart,” said Captain Bridget Champane ‘14. “We finished the game of very strong.”

Leading the Blue Devils to victory, Champane scored seven goals. Other goal scorers included Elizabeth Rauh ‘16 (2) , Emma Baer ‘15 , Mia Doyon ‘15 and Ryley Kerik ‘16.

“Being the number one team in the state made us nervous because all other teams are targeting us,” said Champane. “We overcame that by continuing throughout the whole game to out play them.”

Shannon Novak ‘14 had a solid night in net with 16 saves keeping South on top for a majority of the game.

“Our goal right now is to stay on top of the state and that will secure us a good spot in the playoffs,” said Champane.

Their next game was away against the number five Brighton High School on Friday, which they won 15-7.

“Communication is key to our success, playing really smart and not forcing anything we can make sure that we end up on top,” said Champane.
