Girls soccer dominates Lakeview in first win of season, 4-0

By Devlin Francis ’15 | Social Media Director

Outscoring Lakeview 4-0, the girls’ varsity soccer team won their first game of the season on Wednesday night, after tieing L’Anse Creuse North 0-0 on Monday.

“We played the ball and move it around well, controlled it, everybody got it,” said head coach Gene Harkins. “We took control of the game.”

The team’s improved passing and selfless play was the main reason South was able to win, Harkins said.

“We tried to get the ball behind their backline, get the outside midfielders more involved,” said Harkins. “With that we got a lot more attack, more opportunities.”

South got up to an early 1-0 lead when captain Cydney Webb ’15 scored within the opening minutes. Captain Fran Weber ’14 scored again later in the half, to give South a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Halfway through the second half Kathy Collins scored to give South a 3-0 lead. Minutes later she scored again on a penalty kick, in what turned out to be the game winning goal.

“Cydney Webb, Fran Weber, Kathy Collins all really stood out offensively, and the defensive backline was great,” said Harkins. “They haven’t given up too many opportunities, and after two games still haven’t given up a goal, which is great.”

Olivia Withers ’14 and Katy Robert ’15 combined for the shutout in the net.

The girls will play again on Monday at home against Anchor Bay.
