Boys hockey beats Divine Child in an offensive showcase, 6-4

By Jack Weaver ’15 | Staff Writer

In a high scoring affair on Tuesday night, South was able to push their impressive win streak to nine consecutive games, defeating Divine Child 6-4.

South started out strong, getting off to a 2-0 lead, yet Divine Child wasn’t going to go down without a fight. When the 2nd period rolled around, Divine Child would capitalize on South’s mistakes.

“We had trouble getting our feet moving,” said Ian Corbett ’15. “We played a bit slow through the first two periods, and we also weren’t very strong in our defensive zone.”

In the 2nd period, Divine Child would score three unanswered goals, by attacking and breaking down South’s weak defensive zone. This put Divine Child up by a goal entering the final period, and served as a wake up call for the Blue Devils.

“As soon as they dotted us between the eyes and we were down 3-2 entering the 3rd period,” said Head Coach McKillop. “We had to re-group and say to ourselves, we got to go after it. So we did that, and got ourselves in a good position to win.”

South would come surging back in the 3rd period, tying it up early and then following with three late goals to help solidify their win. Andrew Hyde ’14 not only had a hat trick, scoring all three of his goals in the 3rd period, but also scored two of those goals with under a minute left in the game.

“Overall we played well when we needed to,” said Will Poplawski ’16. “We knew we had a possibility of a nine-game winning streak on our hands and we weren’t about to let it slip away.”

“I thought they outplayed us,” said McKillop. “But it’s a lesson learned. We were able to find a way to win, and good hockey teams find a way to win games like that.”
