Top+10+Sports+Moments+of+2013+

By Jared Brush ’15 | Staff Writer

#1 Team of Destiny

On fourth-and-18 with 25 seconds left, Auburn’s Nick Marshall heaved a 73-yard touchdown pass that hit off one Georgia defender and into the arms of Ricardo Louis and the 43-38 victory. Not the only miraculous play of the season, Auburn’s Chris Davis ran back an 109-yard touchdown from a missed field goal to give Auburn a 34-28 victory over the back-to-back defending national champions, Alabama. Both of these miracle plays gave Auburn a spot in the National Championship and the number one sports moments of 2013.

#2 Allen’s Clutch Shot

Making sure to set his feet, Ray Allen hit a game-tying three pointer with 5.2 seconds left of the game. The Miami heat would win in overtime and in Game 7 of the NBA Finals to clinch the championship.

#3 Deep “Trey”

Michigan point guard Trey Burke heaved up a miraculous 30-foot three pointer with 4.3 seconds left to force overtime and eventually a 87-85 win over the favorite Kansas. Michigan advanced to the Elite Eight and eventually the Final Four, which hadn’t been done in 20 years.

#4 17 Seconds

Only 78 seconds stood in front of the Boston Bruins to force a game 7 in the Stanley Cup Finals. Unfortunately for them the Chicago Blackhawks scored 2 goals in 17 seconds to take a 3-2 lead and the Stanley Cup.

#5 The Collapse

Halfway through the third period and up 4-1 in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs first round, the Toronto Maple’s felt good about their chances of advancing. Instead the impossible happened. The Boston Bruins led a dramatic comeback with their last two goals in the last 90 seconds of the game to send it into overtime and eventually the win.

#6 The Hit Heard Around the World

A controversial call let Michigan keep the ball and have another chance to drive for a touchdown in the Outback Bowl. Jadeveon Clowney thought otherwise. Storming through Michigan’s offensive line Clowney plowed through Michigan’s running back, Vincent Smith, forcing a fumble and recorvering the ball himself.

#7 The Blizzard

In the most outrageous soccer game in the history of the U.S. men’s soccer team, U.S. beat Costa Rica 1-0 in a blizzard. The snow went up to the player’s ankles and the players went through heavy-force winds. Puerto Rico tried to protest the game but it was denied and U.S will be in Brazil for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

#8 The Blackout

After a 108-yard kickoff return from Jacoby Jones that put the Baltimore Ravens up 28-6 in the Super Bowl, the lights went out in the Superdome. After a 34-minute delay the San Francisco Forty-Niners went on to score the next 17 points and rally a comeback but just fell short 34-31.

#9. Eighth

With a 93-60 win, the most lopsided win in an NCAA final, over Louisville the UConn Huskies women’s basketball team captured their eighth championship. This dynasty is not slowing down.

#10. Serena Williams Dominates 2013

Winning 11 titles and two Grand Slams, the French and U.S. Open, Williams arguably had one of her best seasons. She did this at the age of 31! Many legends could not make an impact at this age. She also set a WTA single season record $12.4 million.
