Tech Specs: Delivery drones could do more harm than help

By Andrew Cullen ’14 | Staff Writer

A textbook rental company in Australia has designed automated drones that deliver textbooks, according to “The Verge”. The drones fly through the city to the person that needs the textbook using GPS location to find them.

The drones can be connected to android smartphones through the use of an app. The user just has to press a button, and the drone will drop the textbook. They are currently under development, and the first test run is going to be in November, according to “The Verge.”

This seems like a great invention, but I think drones could be used for many more purposes than the mere delivery of textbooks. Think of all the possibilities.

I’m sure that everyone in this school, at some point in our lives, has ventured into the bathroom to find that the person who inhabited it before us did not have the common courtesy to leave at least one square of toilet paper. And we always realize it at the worst possible time. Imagine if you had a drone that delivered a fresh roll of toilet paper at your command.

Or what if you are sitting on the couch one afternoon. You are enjoying the last episode of “Breaking Bad,” when you suddenly feel a pang of hunger. Those Doritos over in the kitchen start to look really appetizing. Alas, it would take way too much effort to stand up and walk all the way over there. If we had drones that could fetch the Doritos for us, life would be so much easier.

As you are sitting on the couch, enjoying those Doritos, you realize that the remote is on the other side of the couch. It’s been a long, emotional day of “Breaking Bad”, and the remote is so far away.

“Ohh dronnneeee”.

I can only see one flaw in this world of drone-servants. Eventually, mankind would become so lazy that drones will stop being made. Obesity will run rampant, and everyone would be glued to their couches.

Personally, I think that is a small price to pay.

Drone technology is making big strides. Australia is one of the few places that allows for the commercial use of drones. It would be in everyone’s best interest if we all had our own personal drones. Just think of what the Oprah Winfrey show would have been like.

“You get a drone! You get a drone! EVERYBODY GETS A DRONE!”

There is one more problem I see with these textbook-delivering drones. They can only be used with android phones, not the ever-popular iPhone. The textbook rental company should have realized that practically every person on this planet has an iPhone, not some junky android “smart”phone.

The American people need to make a stand. We want, dare I say, need drones to do everything for us. Then, and only then, will we achieve true happiness.
