In Paulina Jayne’s latest single “Girl Who Would Be King”, she sings: “I’m not afraid of hard work, not afraid to sweat / Just say I got a hard head, nothin’ I regret / You see I’m the real thing”.

When she wrote these lyrics, Paulina Jayne, known better around South as Paulina Perakis ‘14, knew her goal was to be an artist and songwriter in the “big time country music scene”, she said. But Jayne has a unique spin on modern country music that combines rock, pop, and country.

“I love country music,” Jayne said. “I just so happened to start writing it and my first managers told me that’s the genre I should pursue.”

She recently signed her second management deal with plans to pitch her music to labels starting November 1, Jayne said.  Some of these latest songs will be featured when she opens for country singer Chase Rice on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. at Saint Andrew’s Music Hall of Detroit. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased through the venue’s website or at the door.

“I’m so excited to open for him because I’ll be able to say I knew him right before he became huge,” said Jayne. “He’s going to be the next Luke Bryan of country music.”

Combine an amazing venue such as the Saint Andrew’s Hall with an awesome main act like Chase Rice and you’ve got a great night of country music, Jayne said. She will be playing all original songs with hopes to gain exposure and experience while having a “blast” on stage.

“I’m looking forward to seeing what Paulina does best,” said Annika Nixon ‘14 who plans on attending the concert.” She’s such an amazing artist and I’m so proud of her.”

Jayne and Nixon have been close since the second grade, Nixon said. She’s been supporting Jayne’s music since she started performing and writing. She knows this will be a great concert.

Spanish teacher Scott Peltier went to Jayne’s previous concert and said he really enjoyed it.

“It’s funny to see a different personality from a classroom student to a performer,” said Peltier. “I was entertained and I normally don’t listen to country music.”

After all, Jayne sings it best when she says, “You see I’m the real thing / The girl who would be king”.
