Varsity Football team honors Breast Cancer with last home game against L’Anse Creuse

Devlin Francis and Adam Morris both ’15 | Staff Writers

In order to support the American Cancer Society through the National Football League’s Crucial Catch Program, the South Varsity Football team has been selling pink breast cancer shirts in the hallways during lunch, Head Coach Tim Brandon said via email.

“It’s really for a good cause, supporting the American Cancer Society,” said Richie Kish ’14. “It brings us together, and brings the community together. Lots of people here have been affected by breast cancer, or know someone who has been affected by breast cancer, so it’s good to support it.”

The team hopes to raise at least $1,000, Captain Bennett Jackson ‘14 said. If every player raises $20, the team will raise $1,220.

“We have a lot of people (at South) who like to donate,” said Jackson. “It’s really just supporting a good cause.”

Along with selling shirts, the team will also be wearing pink gear during the game against L’Anse Creuse on Friday, Oct. 18, Jackson said.

“We’re wearing pink and having a ‘Pink Out’ with the student section,” said Jackson. “They’ll wear the shirts, we’ll have our stuff.”

The team will be wearing pink socks and headbands, Kish said.

South is currently 4-3 after beating crosstown rival Grosse Pointe North 21-10 on Friday, Oct. 11. A win against L’Anse Creuse would result in a share of the MAC Blue Divisional Championship, Brandon said.

Following that, they must beat Lakeview on Friday, Oct. 25 to make the playoffs, Brandon said.

“We (have) to beat L’Anse Creuse to get our division championship, then we (have) to go beat Lakeview to get our playoff spot,” said Brandon.

Brandon is confident in his team, and said both games are winnable.

“No game is an automatic win,” said Brandon. “But these are two beatable teams, and two games we’re favored in.”
